Flying squirrels are pests when they enter homes and buildings to nest; when they raid bird feeders; when they feed on gardens, trees and landscape plantings; and when they dig holes in gardens and lawns to bury and retrieve food.

If flying squirrels are in your dwelling or building, they will tear up insulation in your attic and use it to make a nest. And even worse they will also chew through electrical lines. Contact Benson Pest Management to deal with your flying squirrel problems.

Flying squirrels are a cute nocturnal critter. They are quite common, but since their normal hours of business are from dusk to about midnight we don't see them very often. The Northern Flying squirrel is the larger of the two species and comes in at a plump 4 ounces (which is about half the weight of our Red Squirrel).

  • The Amazing Flying Squirrel
Flying squirrels are not capable of flight in the same way as birds or bats but are able to glide from one tree to another with the aid of a patagium, a furry, parachute-like membrane that stretches from wrist to ankle. Their long tail provides stability in flight.
  • Young northern flying squirrels
If you happen to find a baby flying squirrel they need an external heat source. Infant flying squirrels younger than 5 weeks, do not produce their own body heat, they need a heating pad, set on LOW setting.
  • Northern Flying Squirrel Hanging Out
Northern flying squirrels eat nuts, acorns, fungi, and lichens, supplemented by fruits, buds, sap and the occasional insect and bird egg. Northern flying squirrels differ from many squirrels in that lichens and fungi are a large portion of the diet and are not just supplements.
  • Just Hanging Out
The Northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) is one of two species of the genus Glaucomys, the only flying squirrels found in North America (the other is the somewhat smaller Southern flying squirrel, G. volans). Unlike most members of their family, flying squirrels are strictly nocturnal.
  • Northern flying squirrels in tree hole
The northern flying squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) is a long-whiskered, nocturnal mammal of forested areas in North America. Despite its somewhat misleading common name, the northern flying squirrel does not fly, and instead glides by extending a fold of skin that stretches from the wrists to the ankles, using the flattened tail as a rudder. The fur of this species is brown on the upper parts, fading to a buffy-white on the belly
