Our services center around Integrated Pest Management(IPM) which is a stringent prevention-based standard and environmentally friendly, common sense approach to controlling pests.

WHY GO IPM? As per the EPA, an expected 45-million pounds of pesticides are utilized every year as a part of homes and gardens in the United States, with transactions totaling more than $2 billion yearly. The Center of Disease Control (CDC) reports that 90 percent of us here in the US have a blend of up to 43 pesticides in our bodies. A considerable lot of these chemicals have been connected to well-being issues, for example, health problems such as cancer, birth defects, reproductive health problems and neurological problems.

Principles of IPM

Traditional pest control involves the routine application of pesticides. IPM, in contrast:

  • Focuses on pest prevention.
  • Uses pesticides only as needed.

This provides a more effective, environmentally sensitive approach.

IPM programs take advantage of all appropriate pest management strategies, including the judicious use of pesticides. Preventive pesticide application is limited because the risk of pesticide exposure may outweigh the benefits of control, especially when non-chemical methods provide the same results.

IPM is not a single pest control method but rather involves integrating multiple control methods based on site information obtained through:

  • inspection;
  • monitoring; and
  • reports.

Consequently, every IPM program is designed based on the pest prevention goals and eradication needs of the situation. Successful IPM programs use this four-tiered implementation approach:

  • Identify pests and monitor progress.
  • Set action thresholds which are the pest population level at which the pest's presence is a nuisance, health hazard or economic threat.
  • Prevent by removing conditions that attract pests, such as food, water, and shelter.
  • Control is required if action thresholds are exceeded. IPM programs use the most effective, lowest risk options considering the risks to the applicator, building occupants, and environment. Control methods include trapping, heat/cold treatment, physical removal and pesticide application.

Carpenter ants are the most common wood damaging insect in Maine. A mature carpenter ant colony can have several thousand individuals in the colony. Having polymorphic workers the ants can vary in size. The signs of a carpenter ant infestation include sawdust piles in the home , also known as frass, noises in the walls, ants showing up in the living quarters on a consistent basis, and flying winged reproductive ants commonly mistaken for termites in the home. In Maine carpenter ants appear as a black ant usually 1/8 to 1/2 inch long.

Colonies of some ant species can be controlled with baits, but because carpenter ants have such a varied diet, baits are not very successful. Spraying foraging workers with most insecticides is of limited value because, even though some workers will die, the colony will largely be unaffected by the treatment.

Because carpenter ants live in colonies, a treatment which targets the colony will be most effective. Finding the colony is important. Look for the piles of sawdust to locate the entrance. Another method to find the colony is to watch the movement of foraging ants. They are most active at night. We inspect the entire structure and surrounding grounds, because the nest may be outdoors.

Once we find the colony, control strategy depends on where it is.

Mice and rats are a very common household problem in Maine. And as the weather gets colder that's the time of year when mice make their way into homes. To keep a healthy environment in your home it's important to keep these pests in check. There are many reasons to prevent mice from entering your home or structure. They transmit disease, chew through wood and wiring and can contaminate food. I Rodents can shed waste throughout the household including attics, basements and food preparation areas and are often heard scurrying through attics and walls.

A thorough inspection is a necessity when dealing with rodents since there are many variables in dealing with these pests. Mice and rats will make a home anywhere they can access food and cover, including farm buildings, under houses, rubbish dumps and even sewage systems. Benson Pest Management can come up with a rodent management plan that may include wiring off areas, know as exclusion, bait stations, sanitation and or traps. It will depend on your particular situation what the best course of action will be. Be rest assured Benson Pest Management has many years of experience in dealing with rodent nuisance problems.

Stings from yellow jackets and bald faced hornets can be very painful and run the risk of a allergic reaction in some people. They can be very aggressive at defending their nests which can be found at a variety of places. Commonly it appears as a grey paper balloon and can grow quickly as the colony expands towards late summer. Yellow jackets commonly build ground nests as well. These predatory wasps are found throughout Maine.

The nests yellow jackets and other types of hornets like the baldfaced hornet should always be approached with caution, preferably at night when most of the workers are present but reluctant to fly. Try not to carry a light, as wasps and bees may fly toward it. Instead, set the light aside or cover it with red cellophane (insects cannot see red light).

Benson Pest Management gets many emergency calls during the course of the summer for yellow jackets, wasps and bald faced hornets. We have the proper protective equipment to treat for these dangerous pests. Please leave this job to the professionals at Benson Pest Management.

The European Red Ant is also called the European Fire Ant; It is an invasive insect in Maine, increasing in its geographical range (particularly in coastal communities) and in its encounters with homeowners. A sign of a fire ant problem is visible mounds in the yard. These small red ants carry a bad sting that can cause burning stinging sensation and allergic reaction in some people. They aggressively defend their nest often repeatedly stinging the intruder. Where this insect has established nests, homeowners have reported that they are unable to use their yards and gardens because of repeated stings by the ants. They should be considered a hazard in the yard.

Many homeowners, business owners and public land managers currently rely on insecticides to curb this pest. Since populations seem to resurge after such treatment, this strategy appears to provide only short-term control. If you think you may have a fire ant problem please call Benson Pest Management to schedule an inspection to determine if in fact you do have fire ants and what the proper course of action would be. We deal with fire ants on a regular basis and have the solution.

They Have Fun In Your Attic, But...

These pesky squirrels can make your nights miserable if they get into your attic. They are nocturnal creatures who love to play at night and in the early morning. Once they build their nest in your garage, barn or house you're in for some frolicking times and some serious damage. Flying squirrels can cause damage by chewing on wires, insulation and wood while urinating and defecating throughout.

Flying Squirrel

First things first: you've got to get them out of your garage, barn and especially your home. The first part of our job is to determine how they are getting in and make sure that those areas are closed off.

We remove the squirrels using an exclusion method that allows the squirrel to get out but they can't get back in. Of course we will be checking to see if there are any babies and will have to remove those by hand.

We are extremely familiar with these pests and can rid you of these nuisance animals with Benson Pest Management's Services.
